The Playbook No One Gave You

Nodal

A clear-eyed look at what the surrogacy journey actually involves, and how to navigate it without losing your mind.

If you've started researching surrogacy, you already know the internet is full of vague guides, outdated agency brochures, and forums where no one agrees on anything. What you need and what almost no one provides, is a straight answer to a simple question: How does this actually work?

This is that guide. Not every detail, but enough to help you understand what you're getting into and what to expect at every stage.

Before you even think about matching

The most important work happens before you ever speak to a surrogate. Most intended parents rush toward matching. The ones who have smoother journeys do the groundwork first.

That means getting honest about your non-negotiables — the things that genuinely matter to you versus the things that just feel like they should matter. Termination stance is one of the most critical alignment points in any match. Most other preferences are worth examining more critically before you let them shrink your candidate pool.

You'll also want to understand the legal landscape of the state where a potential surrogate lives. Laws around pre-birth orders and birth certificates vary significantly — and if you're a same-sex couple or using donor material, some states offer meaningfully friendlier legal pathways than others.

The journey at a glance

The path from "I want to pursue surrogacy" to "I'm holding my child" has several distinct phases. Here's an honest overview of what they involve:

"The primary difference between Nodal and a traditional agency is how you match. Once matched, you get the full white-glove experience."

The parts that tend to surprise people

A few things consistently catch intended parents off guard, not because they're secrets, but because no one takes the time to explain them clearly upfront.

Medical clearance takes time. IVF clinics move slowly. The physical appointment can depend on where your surrogate is in her menstrual cycle. Building in realistic expectations here prevents a lot of frustration.

You are responsible for all pregnancy-related bills that insurance doesn't cover. Understanding the Affordable Care Act options, coordinating multiple insurance policies, and securing life insurance for your surrogate are all parts of the process that need attention before transfer — not after.

Escrow is non-negotiable. Before an embryo transfer can take place, a third-party escrow account must be funded with at least the full base compensation plus $10,000. This protects everyone.

On finances:
Check whether your employer offers fertility benefits. Many do, and many intended parents simply never ask. If yours doesn't, there's a case to be made for advocating that they should. Grants are also available for those in financial need.

What case management actually means

If you opt into case management, you're not just getting a coordinator, you're getting a dedicated team that handles the entire operational weight of the journey: medical record coordination, insurance, escrow setup, legal introductions, travel booking, and ongoing troubleshooting.

The full scope of case management services, cost structure, and what's covered at each phase of the journey is laid out in detail in the Nodal Playbook, available when you create your profile.

You're protected if things don't go as planned

Matches sometimes don't work out. Clinics sometimes decline medical record packets. Medical evaluations occasionally surface issues. Nodal has built safeguards for all of these scenarios.

Built-in protection at every stage

If your clinic declines a surrogate's medical record packet within 30 days, you can rematch at no additional cost or receive a majority refund of your platform fee. If a match dissolves after clinic approval but before the Gestational Carrier Agreement is signed, reduced-cost rematching options apply. You're not starting over from scratch.

This journey is one of the most significant things you'll ever undertake. It deserves clarity, not ambiguity. That's the whole reason Nodal exists.
